On 28 July 2023, Spectronik successfully completed the installation, commissioning and training of its Hydrogen fuel cell system for a Hybrid train developed by PT Industri Kereta Api (INKA) in Madiun - East Java, Indonesia.

INKA is an Indonesian state-owned rolling stock manufacturer with products ranging from locomotives, Light Rail Transit (LRT), passenger railroad cars, goods wagons, diesel multiple units (DMU) and electric multiple units (EMU).

Powered by four energy sources (Pantographs, Diesel Electric, Batteries and Hydrogen Fuel Cell), the 2-cars Hybrid Train is specially commissioned for Politeknik Negeri Madiun (PNM), a tertiary vocational institution specializing in the operation and maintenance of trains. INKA and PNM are especially forward-looking in recognizing the need to educate the next generation skilled workforce in future technologies such as Hydrogen fuel cells which may eventually play a prominent role in decarbonizing diesel trains.

Spectronik’s role in this project was to custom develop a 12kW Hydrogen fuel cell system including the Hydrogen gas panel, pressure regulating and safety devices, stainless steel tubing, PLC based control system, CAN Bus communication and 600V multi-stage boost DC-DC converter to connect the fuel cell output to the train’s high voltage bus line. The hybrid train is deliberately designed for low-speed (<35km/h) operation as an added safety and the Hydrogen fuel cell contributes to the overall traction power as well as to support the auxiliary equipment on-board the train.
